Top Wasp & Hornet Removal Companies in Murray, Utah Ranked
Discovering a buzzing nest on your property can be alarming. In Murray, Utah, managing stinging insects requires a careful approach, balancing the protection of vital pollinators like honeybees with the safe elimination of aggressive wasps and hornets. This guide provides essential information on local bee and wasp control, including typical nesting spots, seasonal activity, and professional removal options, helping you make an informed decision to protect your home and family.
Understanding the Stinging Insects in Murray
The Salt Lake Valley is home to a variety of stinging insects, each requiring a different management strategy. Knowing whether you're dealing with a beneficial bee or a problematic wasp is the first critical step.
Honeybees are protected under Utah state law and should never be exterminated. These crucial pollinators are often managed through relocation. Many local beekeepers and specialized pest control companies offer swarm capture and hive removal services to safely transfer the colony to an apiary. In fact, Murray City ordinances permit residential beekeeping, provided the beekeeper is registered with the Utah Department of Agriculture 1.
In contrast, wasps, yellowjackets, and hornets are typically more aggressive and pose a greater sting risk, especially when their nests are near doors, patios, or play areas. Species like paper wasps, bald-faced hornets, and ground-nesting yellowjackets usually require professional extermination for safe and complete removal.
Common Nesting Locations Around Your Home
Stinging insects seek out sheltered, dry spots that offer protection from weather and predators. Being aware of these common nesting sites can help you spot a problem early.
- Eaves, Soffits, and Overhangs: The sheltered angles of rooflines and porch ceilings are prime real estate for paper wasps and hornets to attach their nests.
- Attics and Wall Voids: Small cracks in siding, roof vents, or gaps around utility lines can grant access to enclosed spaces. Bees and wasps can build large, hidden nests inside walls or attic rafters, which can be particularly challenging to address 2.
- Underground Burrows: Yellowjackets frequently repurpose old rodent burrows or dig nests in soil under dense ground cover, in garden beds, or along retaining walls 3.
- Trees, Shrubs, and Bushes: Bald-faced hornets construct large, football-shaped paper nests in tree branches, while paper wasps may build smaller, umbrella-shaped nests in sheltered shrubs 4.
- Outdoor Items: Don't overlook children's play sets, grills, lawn furniture, or unused equipment stored in a shed or against the house. These can provide a temporary, attractive shelter 5.
The Seasonal Cycle of Bees and Wasps
Activity for these insects is highly seasonal, which influences both the risk they pose and the best time for control measures 6.
- Spring (March-May): Overwintering queens emerge to start new colonies. Nests are small and populations are low, making this an excellent time for inspection and preventive sealing of potential entry points 7.
- Summer (June-August): Colonies expand rapidly. Foraging activity is at its peak, and nests become large and noticeable. This is when most calls for wasp extermination and bee removal occur 8 9.
- Fall (September-November): Nests reach maximum size. As food sources diminish, wasps and hornets can become more aggressive and are more likely to come into conflict with people. After the first hard freeze, most of the colony dies, leaving only new queens to hibernate 10 11.
- Winter (December-February): Visible activity ceases. Wasps and hornets are largely absent, while honeybee clusters remain inside their hives. This is a safe time to remove vacant, accessible nests and perform exclusion work 12.
Professional Removal: What to Expect
For safety and effectiveness, hiring a licensed professional is almost always recommended for stinging insect control. Local Murray providers like Thorn Services, Stewart's Lawn & Pest Control, and A-1 Exterminators are equipped to handle these situations 13.
A professional will first conduct a thorough inspection to identify the insect species, locate all nests, and assess the scope of the problem. The treatment plan differs significantly:
- For Wasps & Hornets: Technicians use specialized insecticides and protective equipment to eliminate the colony, followed by physical nest removal to prevent pheromones from attracting new insects 14 15.
- For Honeybees: The goal is live relocation. Professionals may collaborate with a local beekeeper to vacuum the swarm or carefully cut out comb from a structure to transfer the colony to a new hive box 16.

Safe Practices and Prevention Tips
While professionals handle the removal, homeowners can take steps to deter stinging insects from settling in the first place.
- Seal Entry Points: In early spring, caulk cracks in your home's exterior, repair damaged screens, and seal gaps around utility penetrations and vents 19 20.
- Manage Attractants: Keep trash cans tightly sealed, clean up fallen fruit promptly, and avoid leaving sugary drinks or food uncovered outdoors.
- Modify Landscaping: Reduce dense ground cover near your home's foundation and keep tree branches trimmed back from the roofline.
- Inspect Regularly: Periodically check the common nesting sites listed above, especially in spring and early summer when nests are small and easier to manage.
- Never Disturb a Nest: If you find a nest, do not attempt to knock it down or spray it yourself, especially if you are allergic. Agitated insects can swarm and deliver multiple stings 21.

To the family that came to our Visitor Center on Saturday (8/2) asking about tarantula hawk wasps- Look how many were outside less than three hours after we met! Last weekend a family asked our Park Interpreter about these stunning insects. She excitedly lead them outside, claiming "There's always a bunch out front on the rush milkweed this time of year- let's go look!" Unfortunately, there were ZERO tarantula hawk wasps to be found! Less than three hours later, long after the family had gone, the expected abundance of wasps was in full swing, and these videos were taken. 🧡 We're hoping that lovely family follows us on social media. 💙 Regardless, we're happy to share these fascinating insects with all of you! Although intimidating in appearance, these wasps are quite docile to observers. Their stings are one of the most painful in the world, but the park has never had a reported case of a guest being stung by one. They are not territorial, as they are NOT a social nest-building species. So if these wasps aren't stinging humans, what ARE they using their stingers for? Post your knowledge in the comments! (Hint: Their name is a big clue....) - https://www.facebook.com/valley.of.fire/posts/to-the-family-that-came-to-our-visitor-center-on-saturday-82-asking-about-tarant/1181415190695352/ ↩
